"My advisory is a very special place to be. I love being
in my advisory...because it is where everyone shows themselves."
-Tabitha S.
At Charyl Stockwell Preparatory Academy, we take a very different approach to secondary education. Our middle school consists of approximately 250 sixth to eighth grade students who are grouped into small advisories, each run by one teacher. The goal of our advisory program is not just to build classroom community, but for the advisory teacher to act as one contact point for parents, communicating the whole child growth of their student(s) over the course of the three years they spend with us in middle school. Getting the opportunity to spend a full three years with a middle school student is a pretty powerful experience! We meet for 40-60 minutes a day for a variety of reasons, including administrative announcements, class meetings and discussions, study and homework sessions, team building exercises, monthly lunches, and Friday conferencing. These advisories become a family of sorts, where students feel comfortable voicing their opinions, being silly, mentoring each other, working cooperatively in groups, and ultimately forming long-term, supportive friendships. As you can see from the pictures and student comments below, our "Frazer Advisory" is a safe and positive classroom community for my middle schoolers, the foundation of a strong educational experience at the middle level.
"In advisory we have fun, we can kid around with each other,
and we're like extended family."

"Everyone is unique, but we all contribute to making
advisory a special place to be. We all get along (usually!)"
